Preventive Dental Hygiene
Regular oral examinations and hygiene cleanings at Arrowsmith Dental Group in Parksville can help you prevent any dental issues and keep your smile healthy.
Ideally twice a year, you'll visit your dentist to provide them the opportunity to identify any oral health issues and develop a plan to treat them accordingly.
Because even people with excellent oral hygiene habits can miss spots in their mouth that are difficult to reach, a dentist uses special tools to ensure your teeth and gums are free of bacteria and decay that cause diseases and other issues.
During your exam, your dentist will check the health of your gums, teeth, bite and jaw for any decay, diseases, infections or other abnormalities. If it's been a year or more since you've last had an x-ray, these will be taken.
Exams may also involve dental x-rays, an oral cancer screening and other diagnostic procedures as required.
Oral Health Care at Home
Keep your smile healthy between dental appointments by brushing your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time, and flossing once a day.
A deep cleaning is a critical part of your exam, and your dental hygienist can complete this either before or after or your exam to prevent and treat disease.
To start, a scaler will be used to remove any plaque and tartar. A polisher will then be topped with coarse toothpaste to eliminate any leftover plaque or stains, followed with a thorough flossing of your teeth and gums.
Are you or your child at high risk of tooth decay? Your dentist might also recommend a fluoride treatment. This natural mineral helps to rebuild the natural minerals in your tooth enamel to prevent or reverse tooth decay.
